It’s Botox Babe

My big 3-0 hit me last year and with it went my waistline, taut arms and self-esteem. Ok, maybe these things happened because I stopped exercising and started eating like a Samoan King but still the timeline is bothersome. Looking for quick fix ways to slap a temporary bandage on my perceived unattractiveness I started flirting with the idea of Botox. Now a household name and synonymous with fleeting vanity; Botox is something I had very little understanding of and seemed appropriate only for my later years. Discussing the procedure at my go-to Med Spa the nurse assured me I was a perfect candidate since I had virtually no wrinkles but only the faintest of a potential crease along the forehead.  As Botox was considered ideal in preventative wrinkle formation this was the area to focus on. As an added bonus the “lifting” effect of the Botox injection would temporarily lift my brow making my high arch envy more attainable.

To narrate the procedure it went something like this: I iced my forehead, brow area and temples for approx. 10 minutes. The injection sites were then swabbed with alcohol and the micro-needles were filled with the Botox solution. The sting of the needle sounded worse than it felt, as a soft “pop” was unnervingly heard since skin tends to be thicker along these areas. The push of the fluid was painless and it went by very fast, maybe 7-10 minutes total. The temples hurt the most while the forehead was not exactly pleasant but definitely tolerable. My nurse was assessing her work between injecting to insure it was evenly distributed and once satisfied I had a full 45cc between both sides of my head. The injection site didn’t bruise and only felt tender for a day or so. The oddest side-effect of Botox has to be the weird feeling of heaviness in my brow that came over me and lasted a solid two weeks. Talking to others who have had this done I hear this feeling is totally normal and you learn to ignore the sensation altogether once you’re a seasoned injectee.

The results were noticeable and while I was secretly fascinated by the challenge of trying to move frozen facial features I was a little surprised when I was still able to move my brow and make expressions as if it had never been performed. Not enough used? Am I exceptional when it comes to muscle control? Who knows but the jury’s still out on that one. I’ll probably go back since it’s hard to close Pandora’s Box was opened. While there’s no right time to start, I’d err on the side of sooner rather than later. After all, an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure…or so I’ve heard.
